Hazel Wolf K-8
Green Building Capital Campaign
About the Project
Hazel Wolf K-8, Seattle’s only public, E-STEM K-8 school, is excited about our new school building, which is slated to open for the 2016-2017 school year. Funded through Seattle Public Schools BEX-IV Levy, the new building will include many exciting green features, including a green roof, a rain garden, and 100% geo thermal heating and cooling.
As a school community, we want to do more to incorporate additional environmental learning opportunities into the building that go beyond what the School District can use public funds to create. At our recent auction, we launched a 2-year capital campaign to add solar electric panels and a living wall.
A Living Wall
A living wall uses plants to treat water and remove harmful contaminants before it is returned to the storm system and eventually to Puget Sound. Rain and gray water are delivered to the wall through a drip irrigation system. The water is drained through a variety of carefully selected plants that each specialize in removing certain things from the water. The plants also absorb CO2 and produce oxygen, creating healthier air in the building and students will be able to test water quality as it enters and exits. The living wall will be the prominent feature of the school’s lobby and immediately makes a bold statement about the values and focus of the Hazel Wolf E-STEM Program.
The roof of the building has been specifically designed to support an array of photovoltaic solar panels with the electrical infrastructure to receive that energy back into the power grid. PV Solar panels convert energy from the sun into electricity, which can be used to power the new school.
Donor Recognition Wall
We can’t build these amazing projects without your generous support. Since this is our first ever multi-year capital building campaign, the PTSA Board will permanently recognize your gifts with a Donor Recognition wall. The Hazel Wolf Donor Wall will feature a northwest scene - a tall tree with a winding stream of salmon watched over by the forest residents.
Donors giving over $4000 will receive a prominent, one-of-a-kind piece like a wolf, or perhaps an owl or eagle. Gifts over $2500 will be recognized with a salmon in the stream. Leaves in the tree are available too: Gold for $1000, Silver for $500, and Bronze for $250. But we want more families to have an opportunity to be part of this legacy, so all gifts over $50 will be commemorated on a plaque along the base.
